The Pilot...

               COL Charles E. McGee is one of the few pilots of the US Air Force credited with fighting in three wars, World War II, Korea and Vietnam War.  McGee was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 7, 1919.  He enlisted in the US Army on October 26, 1942 and was sent to Tuskegee Army Air Field for pilot training.  He graduated with Class 43-F on June 30, 1943 and sent overseas with the 302nd Fighter Squadron of the 332nd Fighter Group, flying 136 combat missions and was promoted to Captain.  He completed his combat tour on November 17, 1944 and returned to the United States on December 1, 1944.  On his return to Tuskegee, he was given Twin-Engine training and assigned as a Twin-Engine Instructor, a position he held until Tuskegee Air Field closed in 1946.  COL McGee remained in service at the end of World War II and was sent to Lock-bourne Army Air Base and assigned as the Operations and Training Officer.  In 1948, he attended an Aircraft Maintenance technical course at Chanute Field, Illinois and was assigned to the 301st Air Refueling Wing, Smoky Hill Air Force Base, Kansas.  When the Air Force was integrated, he was first sent to March Field, California and later to Clark Field, Philippines Islands.  He Flew P-51 aircraft during the Korean War, as a member of the 67th Fighter-Bomber Squadron.  He was credited with 100 missions and awarded the DFC, Air Medal and promoted to Major.  Returning to Clark Field he took over the command of the 44th Fighter-Bomber Squadron and flew the P-80 Jet aircraft.  In 1953 he attended the Air Force Command and Staff School Maxwell Air Base, Alabama. At the completion of this course he held several assignments with the Air Defense Division, that qualified him to fly the F-89 Interceptor and brought him a promotion to Lt. Colonel. In 1959 his was promoted to Regular US Air Force Officer and sent to Italy to command the Luigi Balogna Sea Plane Base and the 7230th Support Squadron in conjunction with NATO deployment of the Jupiter missile.  In 1962 LtCol McGee served at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota and at Richard-Gebaur Air Base, Missouri.  In 1967 he completed tactical Reconnaissance and RF flight training and appointed to command the 16th TAC Recon Squadron, Tan Son Nhut Air Base.  He flew 172 missions during Vietnam, and was awarded the Legion of Merit and other air medals.  After his tour in South Eastern Asia, LtCol McGee was assigned as a Liaison Officer serving USAEUR and the 7th Army in Germany.  He was promoted to Colonel and completed his tour in Europe with the 50th TAC Fighter Wing as Chief of Maintenance.  COL McGee returned to the States in 1971 and was assigned as Director of Maintenance Engineering, Air Force Communications Service and Commander of the 184th Air Base Wing and Richard Gebaur Air Force Base, MO.  He was awarded the Legion of Merit Oak Leaf Clusters.  Col McGee retired on January 31, 1973 as a command pilot with 6,308 flying hours.  His award include: the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, President Unit Citation, Korean President Unit Citation and the Republic of Greece World War II Commendation Medal. COL McGee, representing all the Tuskegee Airman, is the President of the Tuskegee Airman, Inc.
