On July 25, 1992, in a speech at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to dedicate a monument to the memories of the heroic Buffalo Soldiers, General Colin Powell said: “All of us need to know where we came from so our young people will know where where they are going ...I am deeply mindful of the debt I owe to those who went before me. I climbed on their backs ... I challenge every young person here today: don’t forget their service and their sacrifice; and don’t forget our service and sacrifice, and climb on our backs. Be Eagles!” As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Powell held the highest rank and position an African-American had obtained in the armed services. By accepting the appointment of Secretary of State, he serves in the highest office an African-American has held in this land. This is another milestone worth celebrating. It is also worth noting that in this office, General Powell is four heart beats from the highest command post any military person could hope to obtain: Commander-n-Chief of the United States of America. By paving the way for others to follow, General Powell represents the modern-day embodiment of the legendary Buffalo Soldier.
