The Origin" is a painting by the artist John Will Davis capturing the travel of the African Blacks from West Africa to the New World to become slaves of the tobacco and cotton plantations. Although some slaves never owned much, history tells of their riches in spirit and gospel. Slavery has been abolished in the United States for 135 years, but history holds fact of this very thin line between being a slave and being free.
Europeans established colonies in the New World during the 1500’s, which brought expansion of the slave-plantation system. This system created a way of life for our ancestors that existed over 400 years and caused mass murders and devastating wars. During the 1600's and 1700's, most slaves in the Southern States working from sunrise to sunset, were treated very harsh and bitter. In these fields, such crops as tobacco, sugar, and rice were major products. In 1793, after the invention of the cotton gin, the high demand for cotton led to an increase in cotton plantations during the 1800's.
African Americans today can be proud of their history because of what it took to get to where we are today as a people. An old saying, "never forget where you come from" is a motto that we should never forget. With this said, you now have The Origin.
