During the civil war, black men were sent to the west to fight the "Indian wars" while their white counterparts went back to fight the South.  The Indians referred to these new soldiers as "Buffalo Soldiers" because their skin color and hair texture resembled the buffalo. They were respected as valiant fighters and said that they fought like a wounded buffalo.  Because the buffalo is a considered a sacred, the name Buffalo Soldiers was one of great honor.
