My Biography

During the spring of 1880, Victorio and his band of Mescalero Apaches were on a deadly warpath in their efforts to occupy territories in Mexico, Texas and New Mexico. Many troops from the 9th & 10th Regiment (among others) participated in missions of protection, including a young officer named Henry Flipper. Most notably of these campaigns occurred following a surprise Indian attack south of old Fort Quitman (north bank of Rio Grande) and the attack at Eagle Springs. The units at Eagle Springs were fortunate to stave off the Indian attack until reinforcement by Flipper and others could arrive. Those camped at Fort Quitman were not so fortunate. Loss of life was high. The battle at Eagle Springs, although bloody, ended when the Indians were forced to retreat. However, with this defeat came many casualties among the troops. Those that were slain were buried where they had fallen. Each received an honored military burial conducted by Lt. Flipper. These fallen warriors were laid to rest as Lt. Flipper offered prayer over them. A hero's fire salute was rendered and taps was played by the bugler in honor of the brave and courageous soldiers of this campaign!
